Summary:

The Community Outreach and Education Specialist is a key brand ambassador for AlexRenew, providing leadership and assistance in the implementation of AlexRenew’s vision related to public trust, and watershed stewardship. The specialist collaborates with public and private educators, public officials and staff, community agencies, civic groups, environmental organizations, and others to provide awareness of the value of clean water. The programs will position AlexRenew as the expert water partner in Alexandria. Target audiences include individual citizens, STEM-focused students, scout troops, civic associations, water-dependent businesses, governmental and higher education institutions, engineering associations, environmental nonprofits, and more. The specialist’s reach is primarily local and regional, but could occasionally be national and international in nature.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Provides leadership and implementation of educational activities, including development of new programs that align with our 2040 vision.
Recommends, plans, implements, and evaluates projects for outreach and education that are appropriate and cost-effective to reach our target audiences.
With AlexRenew staff and partners to execute educational events on and off campus, including our annual Water Discovery Day, AlexRenew campus tours, and our annual Alexandria Earth Day presence. Specialist may also work individually, as needed, to execute events.
Interacts with educators, civic groups, environmental organizations, and others about water initiatives that promote responsible stewardship of clean water. Develops materials to support these efforts.
Develops relationships with school administration and teachers to enhance water education within public and private schools. Leads and conducts in-school programs that focus on water stewardship and how a water system works.
Develops and manages a community outreach and education budget.
Seeks and applies for grant funding associated with water education and outreach.
Ensures water education topics are promoted via appropriate communications and outreach vehicles.
Orients new staff to AlexRenew outreach and education procedures and volunteerism.
Develops metrics and reporting to share with senior leaders, board members, and others regarding the success of outreach efforts.
Participates in communications training programs. Shares information as requested about position and tasks with communications team.
Understands and weaves our organizational sustainability objectives into daily work and decision making.
Actively promote safe behaviors and health awareness at all times in the execution of daily tasks.
Leads and/or participates in after hours and weekend educational events, as needed.
Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education and/or Experience:

· Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university in Communications, Public Relations, Education, English or related field desired. A combination of education and experience will be considered.

· Five (5) years’ experience preferred in developing and executing community outreach programs for a utility or public organization.

Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and work independently
A collaborator who is comfortable working with a diverse set of teams across the organization
Excellent analytical, written and oral communications, and presentation skills
Exhibits a positive, proactive attitude and possesses drive, energy and ambition
Willingness to work after hours and on weekends, as needed, to ensure success of programs and events
A drive to optimize results for the organization and its partners
The ability to make smart and timely decisions while maintaining a comprehensive awareness of the organization
Impeccable attention to detail
Project management experience to ensure timely planning and execution of programs and events
Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, and be flexible and adaptable
Experience coordinating with vendors and consultants
Demonstrated ability to manage the business aspects of assigned projects, such as expense and revenue tracking and development of measurements and reports
Strong organizational skills
Ability to work well under pressure and deadlines
· Proficient in Microsoft Suite and Adobe Creative Suite

Able to develop interactive educational programs for all ages.
Ability to work independently or as a team member to meet desired outcomes
Experience working with environmental education (preferred).
Experience in grant writing and the ability to search for grant opportunities (preferred).
The ability to educate and influence internally to inspire staff participation in outreach and education activities and events.
Organizational and analytical skills to ensure processes are developed and adhered to, and metrics and reports are developed.
